Mikayel's Heart: Only Her

I'm really excited to present Mikayel's heart from Christine Fonseca's novella DIES IRAE. Christine is an awesome author, incredibly talented, and a wonderful friend. DIES IRAE is the perfect introduction to her upcoming novel LACRIMOSA.

Frozen, that’s what I feel now—just frozen. The warmth is gone; the love—gone; taken from me in a single selfish act. I should’ve seen it coming, should’ve known there was no other way things could end. But I was na├»ve. I assumed that I could have a life with her, escape my duty to the Council.

I was wrong.

So very wrong.

And now, my heart carved from me, I am left clinging to my duties, hoping to find peace. But I can’t. Every moment is filled with my longing for her. Every thought is only of her. Every breath crushes the hollowness that remains where my heart once was, reminding me of a simple truth.

She’s gone.

And it’s my fault.

She’s gone.

            And I’m left in pieces.

She’s gone.

And so is my heart.

When Danyelle asked to collect Mikayel’s heart, learning what he held most dear, my mind immediately when to the pain that consumes him. His heart has only belonged to one person—Demi. He wishes it wasn’t so, his shame consuming him most days. But denying his feelings has only led to problems—large problems.  So he focuses on the Council and his duty, pretending to feel nothing when all the while he is consumed with rage, pain, guilt, and love.
Profound, burning love.

Some sacrifices should never be made--even for love.

Mikayel lives by one rule—obey the orders of the angelic Council at all costs. That is, until he and his friends, Azza and Demi, are sent to Earth. Assigned as Watchers while they await their decision of which angelic order to serve, the three assume the bodies of teenagers and experience life as human.

The sensations are overwhelming as the angels experience a host of human emotions—rage, terror, love—and come ever closer to breaking one of the unbreakable rules—never fall in love.

But being human isn’t the only problem facing the three angels. Unbeknownst to the Council, demonic activity is on the rise, threatening to break a tenuous peace that has existed for a millennia; a peace Azza seems bent on destroying.

Caught in a struggle for power with unseen demonic forces and Azza, and fighting against his rising emotional attachment to Demi, Mikayel must now decide how much he is willing to sacrifice for his new found love—a decision that could reignite an ancient war and will threaten the only thing that matters to the angels, the survival of humanity.
